Ann Olivarius is Chair of the Executive Committee of McAllister Olivarius. This UK based law firm specialises in UK and US commercial matters, dispute resolution and employment law. Nelson Mandela and Queen Rania of Jordan have been their clients. Ann Olivarius and her colleagues advise companies that engage in transatlantic business, but also represent firms doing business locally both in England and the US.
For Ann Olivarius, this dual approach to the law was a natural progression for her career. Following studies as an AFS exchange student in Peru where she learnt Spanish, Ann Olivarius went on to study at Yale, where she graduated summa cum laude. At Yale she was an active human rights campaigner. Moving then to take a doctorate in Economics at Oxford, Ann Olivarius
worked with attorney Albert Pergam at Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton to draft arbitration rules which ultimately helped London to become one of the main centres for international dispute resolution. She then returned to the US, where she obtained law and business degrees from Yale, and worked at several investment banking and law firms.
In recent times this knowledge of the financial services sector has helped Ann Olivarius oversee a dispute for the member of a foreign royal family with Kleinwort Benson Bank, in negotiating venture fund investments, and in supporting a well-known UK entrepreneur whose ventures are expanding and bringing her into close association with the Financial Conduct Authority.
She also has had clients in discrimination cases on both sides of the Atlantic. Recent successes include two high profile cases of discrimination in the US, one involving a major bank, the other a global professional services firm. In these cases Ann Olivarius helped to secure two of the highest private settlements ever achieved in the US. Similarly, Ann Olivarius’ representation of a top Fortune 50 company executive in the US who was unexpectedly fired, resulted in a substantial award. A big payout was also secured for UK employees of two major international banks.
In 2011, Ann Olivarius established an additional transatlantic litigation practice in partnership with US attorney Jeff Anderson. This practice focuses exclusively on child protection in the UK.
In 2011, 2012 and 2013, the high quality of management at McAllister Olivarius, with Ann Olivarius at the helm, resulted in accreditation from the Law Society of England and Wales’ Lexcel program. The Lexcel assessor declared the firm’s management to rank in the top 2.5% of all British law firms.
